" By Robin Sharma I've always thought this particular genre as not-so-interesting, but I've never actually tried it before 😑....I'm definitely not prone to prejudice! Its been a while since I read it but I find myself thinking about this book every now and then and subconsciously trying to follow what it says. "PURPLE HIBISCUS" by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

This may be an unpopular opinion, because like many, I really admire Adichie, I’ve posted about her many times and even chose her for my first ‘Wednesday’s Women’ highlight; she is tenacious yet graceful and I’ve loved everything she’s written..... I just didn’t love this one 😬. Have you read this? Is it just me!?

Adichie has set the bar for herself so high - this was her first novel published in 2003, and for me is another example of an author who we can see getting better and better throughout their career.

This is the story of a Nigerian family living under the firm hand of their father and his dominating, indoctrinating, abusive beliefs. It’s also a coming of age tale, told through the eyes of 15 year old Kambili, who is often unaware of the exact nature of the tragedies she’s exposing to the reader.
This is an evocative portrayal of the dark side of Nigerian culture and political turmoil, whilst offering up hope for the future. It’s themes are important and interesting, but for me it was too slow. I didn’t fall for the characters in the same way I did in Americanah or Half of a Yellow Sun. The pace was slow, but then the ending happened all at once. The events were quite predictable, and ultimately I felt like there was some other later to this that’s missing.
If you’re new to reading Chimananda Ngozi Adichie I personally recommend starting with some of her other novels (Half of a Yellow Sun and Americanah are my favs) and also her TED talks and short non fiction texts. I’ve mentioned these in a previous post.
There have been many positive reviews for this. I was in a bit of a reading funk when reading this, so it’s very possible thats affecting my feelings. General rule of they believe that’s safe to go by is: She is an amazing writer and advocate, don’t be put off by My Rating - 7/10 📚
